The History of The Prince Alfred Hotel Ipswich

The Prince Alfred has been an establishment in Ipswich for 181 years and has been steadily climbing the ranks of the best pubs in Ipswich since. In fact, the pub’s original cold room is still intact, standing strong since 1842. In 1961, the Prince Alfred was burned down in a fire; it was rebuilt and reopened two years later in 1963. In 1987, it was purchased by the Johnson family, who still own and run the pub to this day. In 2012, Char’d was opened, its name a reference to the fire that ran through the pub in 1961. Since the Johnson family acquired the Prince Alfred over 36 years ago, we have been slowly building on the humble timber hotel to provide Ipswich with the dining and entertainment experience that we are so proud of today.

OUR STORY

The Prince Alfred hotel was built in 1842 by Mr D Bergin. It was a two-storey timber hotel surrounded by 40 acres of Cotton Fields. The original cold room still stands today, dating back to 1842. Up for sale in 1866 the Ipswich Hotel was a hardwood timber building and contained 7 rooms with a detached kitchen a piggery and garden, store-room, dairy, five stables, stockyard and milking bail.

In 1961, the Historic Prince Alfred Hotel was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and opened in 1963. In 1987, the Johnson Family purchased the hotel from Carlton and have remained passionately independent ever since.

In December 2012, the iconic Ipswich hotel opened its doors to its new Steakhouse, Char’d Restaurant. The name derives from when the hotel burnt down over 70 years ago and continued serving cold beer out of the cold room; the only part of the hotel not destroyed by the fire.

Locals called it ‘The Charcoal Inn’ because of the charcoal and tin underfoot. The 250 seat steakhouse is a popular restaurant among Ipswich locals. Our focus is on local produce, fresh ingredients and carefully matched wines and craft beers. Come in and try our delicious deep fried mars bar, Tomahawk Steak or 8 different hand-rolled pizza’s! With lunch specials and Daily Deals, there’s something to suit every budget!

Tap’d Bar is the biggest bar in the Southern hemisphere with 72 craft beers and ciders on tap. With a range of beers, we have easy drinking beers and more boutique small-batch beers so whatever your budget, you’ll find something to love!
